AAS - Health Information Technology
Associate of Applied Science Degree Requirements The following courses are required for COCC’s Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Technology. Students should work closely with an advisor if they wish to attend part-time. Note that several of the courses qualify students to also earn short-termcertificates in various Health Information Technology areas; see the HIT certificate card for details.

Medical Secretary Certificate: Complete all insurance certificate courses and the following:
Spring Term AH 113 Intro to Study of Disease 5 CIS 120 Computer Concepts 4 or - CIS 131 Software Applications HIT 131A Document Mgmt & Technology 3 HIT 180 HIPPA Management 2 HIT 182 Intro to Medical Coding 4
Medical Transcription Certificate: Complete all medical secretary courses, HIT 131C:
Transcription Application (3 credits, summer term) and pass the medical transcription competency exam.
Effective for 2006-07 Academic Year.
Electronic Medical Billing (EMB) Certificate: Complete all medical transcription courses, the summer and fall term classes listed below and pass the EMB competency exam.

1. To meet this requirement, choose between HHP 231, 242, 258, 266, 295 and one activity or health module -or- HHP 252A.
2. Choose from COCC’s distribution list; each course must have a different prefix.
